Using LEDs to Replace OEM Lamps in Fleischmann (and other) Locomotives

A few people have asked how I fit the LEDs in to the original Lamp-holders - so I took some photos as I went along.

These are for a BR64

The front light has the lamp positioned vertically , so I put a bend in the LED tails so the light fires into the clear plastic light pipe.

Gripping the LED in the alligator clip of a "Helping Hands" soldering tool I add the Blue and White wire.Pre tinning the wires and the LED tails help make a good joint.

Same for the Rear light although this one is not bent as the LED will point directly at the light pipe.

Cut the tails and add some heat-shrink

At this stage I fold the wire back towards the top of the LED and put a larger heat-shrink over the wire and the LED , I also file the top of the LED Flat to disperse the Light a bit better and test that it is all working OK. Some times another layer of heat-shrink is required to make a snug fit - about 2mm is sufficient - no need to cover the whole thing again

Here the Rear LED has been put inside the Original Lampholder .

  2. Hi Kev, these are around 3mm in diameter voltage is 2.8v the resistor drops the voltage. Use a minimum of 1k ohmes
